In shipping companies, there are certain terms used to express the business for example, a ship is coming to such and such port for bunkering purpose. So the next question arise is what is a bunker and the bunkering itself? We have tried to make the things simple to understand.

What exactly a Bunker is and the Bunkering?

In the past, generally ships were driven through the use of coals that produces steam to as a fuel to operate ship’s engine. The Bunker was a location where the coal was stored. However, sometime bunker refers to the name given to Fuel that is used to operate ships. Bunkering is the action of supplying a ship with bunkers. Bunkers also refer to the storage tanks for fuels, oils that a ship transports.

There are various types of Fuel Oil and within the Fuel Oils, there are many classifications, standards and grades.. Few among the type of Fuel Oils are : MGO (Marine gas oil), MDO (Marine diesel oil), IFO (Intermediate fuel oil) , MFO (Marine fuel oil), HFO (Heavy fuel oil).

So, the word bunkering intact its meanings when a ship arrives to fill its bunkers with the kind of fuel from any ports.
