Gas Sampling & Chain of Custody Procedure (ISO 10715, GPA 2166, ASTM D4057, D1265, GPA 2174)
a) Pre-Sampling Requirements
Purge minimum 5x dead volume. Dead volume = (π*d²/4)*L. H2S safety <10ppm TLV, personal H2S monitor mandatory per OSHA. Cylinder validation per DOT-SP 2080, hydrostatic test within 5 years, valve type CGA 350 for H2S. Regulator heating 60-80°C for wet gas to avoid retrograde condensation. Filter 2 micron to remove particulates.
b) Sampling Methods (GPA 2166)
Spot sampling for pipeline QC, Composite per GPA 2166 for custody transfer accounting, Continuous for process control. Floating piston cylinders with constant pressure (GPA 2166) to maintain single phase. Sulfinert® treated cylinders mandatory for H2S, Mercaptan, COS, CS2 to avoid adsorption losses – verified per ISO 10715 Annex.
c) Natural & Feed Gas – Wellhead & Pipeline
Direct from wellhead, separator, pipeline via pitot-type probe per ISO 10715. Insert probe at center 1/3 of pipe diameter, facing upstream. Flow velocity 5-10 m/s optimal. For high pressure >70 bar, use double block and bleed manifold per API MPMS. Heat trace sampling line for C14+ rich gas.
d) LPG / LNG – ASTM D1265 & GPA 2174
LPG: ASTM D1265 piston cylinder, avoid water displacement, GPA 2177 for C3/C4. Cool cylinder to -20°C before filling. Fill 80% liquid max per DOT 49 CFR. LNG: GPA 2174 cryogenic piston sampler, vaporization at 30°C per ISO 8943, sample to 150 bar buffer. No free sampling kit – DOT cylinders not free.
e) Documentation – Chain of Custody per ISO 14912
CoC Form: Sample ID, Date/Time UTC, Pressure psig/barg, Temperature °C, Location GPS coordinates, Well/Platform/Terminal name, Operator Name & Company, Cylinder No. & Serial, Lab ID, Field H2S reading, Purging time, Ambient conditions. LIMS barcode tracking. Photos of sample point, cylinder tag, gauge reading mandatory.
f) Transportation – UN & DOT Compliance
UN pressure vessel compliance, DOT-3E 1800 psi, DOT-3AA 2400 psi for sour gas. Valve protection cap metal, pressure relief burst disc 3000 psi. Label per IMDG/IATA: UN 1971 Natural Gas Compressed, UN 1075 LPG, UN 1972 LNG. Shipper declaration, SDS, CoC attached. Cylinder tracking via RFID/barcode, GPS logger for LNG.
g) Lab Receipt & Preservation
Leak check with Snoop leak detector, pressure log vs field pressure, temp equilibration 20±2°C for 4 hrs per GPA 2166. Analysis within 7 days for H2S/mercaptan per GPA 2166 stability limit, 14 days for C6+ composition. Sulfinert cylinders retain H2S 30 days. Client to arrange DOT-approved cylinders or rent/purchase at cost from ATL network. No free sampling kits per company policy.
