For oil and water sampling/testing, the main standards can be grouped into national and international standards. National standards depends upon the country/region whereas International standards applies everywhere. Moreover, the exact standard should be selected according to the type of oil/water and the test being performed.
1. Oil / Petroleum Sampling Standards
International standards
- ISO 3170:2025 — Hydrocarbon Liquids — Manual Sampling
- Main international standard for manual sampling of crude oil and liquid/semi-liquid hydrocarbons.
- Covers sampling from tanks, road/rail vehicles, ships, drums, cans and pipelines.
- Includes sampling of crude oil, intermediate products, synthetic hydrocarbons and biofuels.
- ISO 3171:1988 — Petroleum Liquids — Automatic Pipeline Sampling
- Applies to automatic sampling of crude oil and liquid petroleum products transported through pipelines.
- ISO currently lists the 1988 edition as the current published version.
- ASTM D4057-22 — Manual Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products
- Widely used for manual sampling of petroleum products and crude oil.
- Covers sampling equipment, sample containers, preparation, sampling locations and procedures.
- Also includes sampling of free water associated with petroleum products.
- ASTM D4177-22 — Automatic Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products
- Used for automatic extraction of representative samples from flowing petroleum streams.
- Covers design, installation, testing and operation of automatic sampling systems.
- ASTM D5854 — Mixing and Handling of Liquid Samples
- Relevant where proper mixing and handling are required before laboratory analysis.
- This is particularly important because poor mixing can make an otherwise correctly collected sample non-representative.

International ISO standards
- ISO 5667-1:2023 — Water Quality — Sampling
- Provides general principles for designing water-sampling programs and selecting sampling techniques.
- Applies to water, wastewater, effluent, sludge, suspended solids and sediments.
- ISO 5667-3:2024 — Water Quality — Sampling — Preservation and Handling
- Covers preservation, handling, transport and storage of water samples.
- Important because incorrect preservation or excessive holding time can change the analytical result.
- ISO 19458 — Water Quality — Sampling for Microbiological Analysis
- Used specifically where water samples are collected for microbiological examination.

- Provides recommended sampling and analytical methods for verifying compliance with Codex food standards.

- Important for an accredited food-testing laboratory.

Key point: The standard for sampling is separate from the standard for the actual laboratory test. For example, you may collect an oil sample according to ASTM D4057 and then test viscosity, water, TAN, TBN, metals, flash point, etc. using their respective ASTM/ISO methods.
