Forensic Fingerprinting technique is used to identify Crude Oil Spillage. Hydrocarbon groups have the most significant group called biomarkers in petroleum.

Crude oil fingerprinting technique uses GCMS (capillary chromatography and mass spectrometry) to reveal the detailed and deep understanding into your reservoir. Gas chromatography (GC) method is used to identify biomarkers (phytane, pristane & other iso prenoids) to produce a different chromatographic trace due to specific maturing processes of biogenic & thermogenic degradation. In combination with mass spectrometry analysis (measuring the mass to charge ratios) rather comprehensive comparisons are made possible. So altogether these two methods GC/MS yield both qualitative and quantitative results for the tested samples.
